Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is Wheels to Work?
A: Wheels to work (WtW] assists low-income, single parent families in
obtaining a reliable vehicle.
Q: How Does it Work?
A: First, individuals needing a
vehicle should obtain, complete and mail the
vehicle application
form.
Second, the Wheels to Work Committee screens the applications for eligibility.
Third, the accepted applicant is matched with an appropriate vehicle as soon as possible.
Lastly, the vehicle becomes the property of the applicant after payment of taxes, transfer fee, small administrative fee and license plates. The applicant assumes all responsibility for insurance and any other costs for the vehicle.
Q: Who is Eligible?
A: Applicants must:
• Be job hunting, employed, or attending school
• Own no other functioning vehicle
• Be a single parent and at least 18 years of age
• Have a valid driver's license
• Have funds to register vehicle (sales tax, license plate renewal,
transfer title fee, and a small WtW administrative fee.)

Q: If I Donate a Vehicle or Funds to Sioux Empire
Wheels to Work, will I be able to deduct it on my income tax?
A: Each taxpayer's circumstances are different. We
cannot offer tax advice; we suggest you contact your tax advisor.
For more information on tax deductions, see
IRS
Publication 4303, A Donor’s Guide to Car Donations,
IRS Form 8283 Noncash Charitable Contributions,
IRS TAX TIP 2007-58, Deducting Vehicle Donations, and your tax
advisor.
Q: Why donate to
Sioux Empire Wheels instead
of another charity?
A: Many charities sell donated vehicles for cash;
typically the vehicle is taken to a wholesale auction lot where it is
sold for far less than the 'book' value. When that happens, only
the sale price would be deductable for the donors income tax. Nearly all vehicles donated to
Sioux Empire Wheels to Work are not sold, but are passed on to qualified
recipients; therefore donors may be eligible to
deduct the fair market value of a vehicle.
For more information on this
difference, see

Publication 4303, A Donor’s Guide to Car Donations,
IRS Form 8283 Noncash Charitable Contributions,

and your tax advisor.
Sioux Empire
Wheels to Work is a 501c3 tax-exempt organization.
Q: Does
Sioux Empire Wheels to Work
ever sell donated vehicles for cash?
A. NO. If we get a vehicle that we cannot use,
we will return it to the donor or donate it to the American Lung
Association of South Dakota. We only do this when the vehicle is not a
safe reliable vehicle for our applicants.
Q: Is My
Vehicle Needed by Sioux Empire Wheels to Work?
A: Vehicles are always needed. Our waiting list usually
has 12-15 families on it. They wait months for a vehicle. More vehicles
would help them get their needed transportation much faster.
